The European projects HOLiFOOD and FoodSafeR will hold their joint final conference on 10โ11 June 2026 at the Omnia Building, Wageningen University Campus (The Netherlands). Under the theme “Safe Food, Smart Future: European Innovations for a Changing World”, the two-day symposium will bring together researchers, authorities, industry representatives and other key stakeholders from across the European food safety ecosystem to share the main outcomes of both projects and discuss the future of the sector.
Two days, six sessions and the big challenges ahead for European food safety
The programme has been designed to offer an integrated โholisticโ view of food safety, combining technological innovation, data science, risk assessment and multi-stakeholder collaboration. The main topics to be addressed include:
- Artificial Intelligence for predicting emerging risks, including foundation models, large language models, satellite imaging for mycotoxin prediction, and the impact of the AI Act on food safety research.
- Multi-stakeholder co-design of food safety tools, featuring the HOLiFOOD platform, the Living Labs and new strategies for risk communication.
- Emerging food safety in novel food production systems, covering low-regulated food chains, antimicrobial resistance in aquaculture, emerging foodborne viruses and chemical fraud in spices.
- Novel detection methods, from untargeted analysis powered by AI to advanced mass spectrometry approaches and genomics, applied to both chemical and microbial hazards.
- Holistic risk assessment, with practical case studies in cereals, pulses and poultry, and resilience thinking approaches at the food business level.
The conference will also feature a keynote by Prof. Panos Skandamis (Agricultural University of Athens) on the challenges of holistic risk assessment in the 21st century, a round table on the need for real-time hazard information, and an open session with presentations selected through a call for abstracts.
